New Jersey guitarist Richard Robinson's CD is an entirely acoustic (and primarily solo) effort entitled Watercolors. The CD is all instrumental and features steel string acoustic guitar compositions inspired by various bodies of water and created by incorporating elements of blues, jazz, R&B and flamenco styles to form a sort of musical impressionism. Interestingly, each piece on the CD was created onsite at the location indicated in the song title ("Lake Erie", "Charleston", "Beach Haven", and so on). Robinson's songs offer a smorgasbord of impressions, including mysterious ambience, reflective seascapes, and atmospherically charged ebbs and flows, and the soothing music contains both textured musings and shimmering flourishes. Additionally, Robinson composed all the songs on Watercolors.
Richard has played guitar on recordings and at music festivals in the United States and Europe with performance artists William Pope L and Lydia Grey, choreographer Karole Armitage, visual artist Mary Edna Fraser, composers Jeffrey Lohn and Thad Wheeler, and Atlantic Records recording artists Blue Magic, among others. While Richard primarily works in electric and digital mediums, Watercolors is an all-acoustic recording. He has studied guitar with Jeff Mironov and guitar and composition with William Walton. Richards lists his guitar influences as Steve Howe, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton and Larry Carlton.
Robinson has two CD projects in the works, one acoustic duo with Roy Goldberg of Stewkey's Nazz and a group project of R&B songs entitled "Rhythm & Buddha". He also co-wrote the theme for a show by Thad Wheeler entitled "Butterfly Dreams" that's currently being shopped to various Broadway producers.
